Maybe it is a little early for a strategic investor, you may think, but StorPool’s CEO Boyan Ivanov is excited. His startup launched in 2011 has just secured funding from IT Web, the investment arm of web hoster SiteGround (Bulgarian origins, international services) to accelerate product development.
When I met Ivanov in the offices of the seed investor LauncHub in December 2012, he talked about the ability to help companies reduce their storage cost by a half, compared, say to cost of Amazon Web Services.
With growth of big data, optimizing storage capacity is becoming increasingly important issue for large companies. What StorPool does is virtualization of storage, utilizing spare capacity on several servers and “gluing” it together as a single data storage unit. The basis of the technology is a combination of a cloud-level interface, and a low-level software. “This is one of the very few teams that do very complicated, low level stuff”, said their test customer, present at the meeting.
According to Tenko Nikolov, the CEO of SiteGround, StorPool allows to achieve unprecedented levels of scalability and performance in data storage management. It is probably a good idea not to disclose the funding figures, considering that the StorPool has found a good niche for its highly-specialized service. With all investors high on B2B, media attention may not be to their advantage.
