Back in March, we covered the results of the regular survey (in this case, the information was from December 2012) conducted by DOC.ua with regards to the status of the IT field in Ukraine. Now, they have revealed the results of their survey for May and June, which they state had a response total of more than 5,000 respondents. This latest information follows the recent publication of their “Portrait Of The Ukrainian IT-Specialist”, which can be found here.
One thing apparent from the survey is that the IT sector in Ukraine is dominated by men, by young people, and by those who live in the country’s largest cities. That there is a gender gap is not a major revelation, but it remains shocking that a whopping 91% of those surveyed indicated that they are male. Geographically, there is also a significant gap, as 46.2% of respondents indicated that they live in Kiev, while only 16.8% live in second-place Kharkov. The third most popular choice here is Lviv at 8.9%.
Further, the author of the report notes that there were only 6 cities with more than 100 respondents, so the respondents were pretty concentrated in just a few locations. When it comes to the age of the respondents, we see a bell-curve in the chart provided. A large portion of the respondents are between 22 and 30, with 25 being the most popular answer and 26the median. After 40, there is a sharp drop-off, with only a few dozen respondents stating that are that age or older.
With regards to specialties, we find that C#/.NET, Java, and PHP are the most popular choices, with 714, 654, and 619 responses, respectively. From there, it’s a dramatic drop to the next-most popular option, C++, which received 311 responses. When it comes to salary, however, programmers in the most popular languages are largely in line with software engineers who write in other languages. For junior software engineer (SE), the highest median salary is $825/month (€628) for C++ and the lowest is $575/month (€438) or those who program in Flex/FLASH/AIR. For a software engineer, the highest median wage is $1,950/month (€1,485) for Ruby/Rails and the lowest is $1,300/month (€1,050) for PHP. And for senior engineers, the highest median salary is $3,200/month (€2,435) for Java (Android) and the lowest median wage is $2,300/month (€1,750) for PHP.
