In the past, we’ve done posts on the average salary for a developer in a number of countries in the region, including Romania, Slovakia, Russia, Bulgaria, Belarus, Moldova. Doc.ua has released a report on the current state of IT salaries in Ukraine, so we’ve decided that it might be time to add another country to this list.
The charts provided by Dou.ua offer insight into salaries in various categories like average salary by specialization, salary by gender, salary by city, and salary by rate of growth. This survey has been previously conducted in May 2012, December 2011, and October 2010, but this latest information comes from this past December and January. In total, 4,226 individuals responded to requests for information. It’s difficult to draw sweeping conclusions from the data provided, but I hope that we can paint some sort of picture of the IT industry in the Ukraine.
Looking at the data broken down by specialization, project manager easily represents the most attractive job in terms of salary. On average, project managers in Ukraine earn $2,856 per month. Ruby-on-Rails developers come in second in terms of average salary at $2,050. Coming in last are developers for QA at $1,245. The specialties in between, based highest-to-lowest salary, are Python, C++, Java, Objective-C, C#/.Net, and PHP.
Developers for Java make not make the most money on average, but the information provided indicates that senior developers for this specialization are the highest overall earners at $2,927. Following these Java developers are senior developers for Ruby-on-Rails, Objective-C, and Python. Senior developers for Ruby-on-Rails are making an average of $2,885, while developers for Objective-C and Python are earning an almost identical average monthly salary of $2,767 and $2,763, respectively. Unsurprisingly, junior developers for all specializations are at the low end in terms of average monthly salary. The situation seems to be the best for junior Ruby-on-Rails developers, who earn an average of $1,152 per month. This is significantly more than junior developers for PHP, who bring in an average of $689. Developers for C++ are second among those in junior roles with average monthly salaries of $893, so Ruby-on-Rails is the clear winner in this area. In every case, those in junior roles earn basically half of what those in “middle” roles bring in, but developers see less of an increase in salary as they hit more senior positions.
Ruby-on-Rails developers also saw some of the most significant increases in salary, particularly for those in senior and middle roles. In both cases, developers in those roles earn an average of almost $600 more per month than before. It’s harder to paint a picture of the situation here, but developers in senior and middle roles for Python, Java, and Objective-C have seen average monthly salary increases of at least $400 since the survey was last conducted. Middle developers for C++ and C#/.Net saw similar average monthly salary increases, as did senior developers for PHP.
In terms of overall increase in monthly salary, those who develop for Ruby-on-Rails are easily doing the best, with an average increase of $338. With an average increase of $231, developers for Objective-C also received a nice bump in pay since the survey was last conducted. Developers for Java saw an average increase of $17 and developers for PHP received an average increase of $10. This may seem insignificant, but it’s far better than the situation that developers for Python, C#/.Net, and QA. In each of those specializations, developers actually saw a decrease in average monthly salary, with those developing for C#/.Net taking a $284 average hit.
Unsurprisingly, Kiev is generally the highest-earning city, followed in order by Lviv, Odessa, Dnepropetrovsk, and Donetsk. This average salary varies greatly by specialization, so be sure to check out the graphs for more specific information.
Finally, perhaps least surprising of all, woman in every specialization report earning less than men. In the case of Java, male developers report earning $1,905 and female developers report average monthly salaries of $1,163, for a difference of $742 per month! The difference is much smaller in a specialty like C++, where men earn an average of $1,956 and women an average of $1,850, but the gender is present in all of the specialties listed.
