I know I should be writing about CEE startup awards but the last time I was invited to attend the CEE startup award ceremony it was held in place with no airport and it would have taken me 3 stop-overs to get to the nearest city. Sorry, I did not make it.
The Europas on the other hand has been running since 2009 and has a panel of judges including all major European VCs – Index, Balderton, Wellington, Earlybird, accelerators and tech media (as well as GoalEurope I admit).
Everyone gets nominated for Europas but who wins depends on the judges’ opinion. The winners of the previous years’ award have been: Russian Zeptolab, Czech Intellitix, NextStories, SocialBakers, Slovenian Toshl, Estonian Transferwise and Russian AlterGeo and in 2011 the Serbian Nordeus and somewhat Bulgarian Lookk.
I am not sure how Nextstories are doing (but its news recommendation extension on Chrome extension works just fine), and with exception of Lookk that sadly closed down other teams are doing rather well. Social Bakers has recently announced raising $26 million in Series C funding. Transferwise is disrupting banking transfers and is my new favourite service to send money abroad.
The London-based PeerIndex, the winner of The Europas 2011, did not quite repeat the faith of its US competitor Klout (sold this year to Lithuium for $200 million), but has refocused on providing social media analytics, and charges north of $100 per month for the basic package.
So nominate your or someone else’s startup today. Applications and nominations are open until 11th of April and can be submitted here.
