I like Flipps a lot (formerly iMediaShare). It is a mobile app that streams videos from your phone to the Smart TV. The collection of channels is constantly growing, and with over 8 million installs it is a powerful video content distribution channel, second only to Apple TV which has 13 million sales today.
With this level of popularity Flipps has already proved that people consume video content in a new way and the backing from the veteran venture investor Tim Draper will undoubtedly push its growth further. The amount of funding has not been disclosed.
Flipps structures content into news, movies, music, education, sports and many other sections. Plus the users can watch photos and videos from its camera roll, Facebook content and Picasa albums. The app also helps with content discovery through its top picks and popular programs , butfor now misses to enable users add stations to favourites, an essential function especially as the number of channels will explode in the future.
Flipps does not require more than for a TV and the mobile phone to be connected to the WiFi. It is compatible with over 250 million existing TV sets.
I do not have a terrestrial TV as an experiment for the moment, so my content is delivered via Smart TV apps, Flipps or LoveFilm and this is fully sufficient for news and entertainment. For example, one can watch TED Talks (also available as a Samsung Smart TV app or a podcast on Pocket Casts app), TWiT or Bloomberg (also available on other mobile content aggregator apps such as TuneIn radio app or podcast app Pocket Casts). Needless to say that YouTube and Vimeo are also included.
