Just recently Slovenian Vox.io founder Tomaž Štolfa launched Layer offering voice SDK to mobile developers to enable them to integrate voice communications into their products. He went on winning TechCrunch Disrupt and raising $1,5 million in seed funding.
Now Russian VoIP startup Zingaya, a company launched in 2010 by Alexey Aylarov, has launched a similar service VoxImplant, a cloud platform designed to allow developers to embed real-time communication (RTC) functionalities into web-based or mobile apps. That is, they will be able to use VoxImplant to add audio and video-communications capabilities to their apps. The service only launched last week, but I’m told that 100 developers signed up for the service in the first few days following the official roll-out.
For web-based apps, VoxImplant offers an SDK using WebRTC for WebRTC-enabled browsers and Flash for all other browsers for developers of web apps and a native iOS and Android SDK which can be integrated into mobile apps. The service allows developers to offer call-recording, calls to and from telephones, video chatting, and more. Those interested in the service should check out their website for a full list of the features available to developers and the rates. The company considers Twilio, Plivo, and Tropo to be their primary competitors in this market but the difference, according to Aylarov, is that VoxImplant uses cloud app engine instead of REST API.
Given Aylarov’s background, this announcement of a new communications service is not a huge surprise. He launched Zingaya, a service which allows people to make phone calls through their browsers without special downloads or phones, in London 2010 as a challenger in the global VoIP market and founded Russian VoIP startup Flaphone (profitable, I’m told) before that. In October 2011, Zingaya raised $1,15 million (853K Euro) from investors Anatoly Gaverdovsky, Alexander Elenskiy, Esther Dyson, and Moscow-based The Untitled VC. They currently have 650 customers, including 50 enterprises.
