We do not write much about hardware startups, but here is one from Slovenia. Ultrasonic Audio Technologies, still a startup that innovates in the space of acoustic communication and human computer interaction, announces pre-orders have opened for their Acouspade directional speaker. The speaker differs from traditional speakers in that it focuses sound upon a single point and aims at any business that requires sounds to be targeted to a particular location. It will be available for pre-order until October 15th. The product will cost 499 Euro (plus VAT) and the company expects to ship orders on or near December 15th.
The directional speaker has prospective applications in retail, digital signage, museum and gallery installations, fair and trade shows, info-points, libraries, the automotive industry, slot machines, mobile devices, and in custom situations. In addition to the speaker, the company offers an integrated digital audio player (Ogg Vorbis format) and a motion sensor. The motion sensor allows adjusting settings to allow for a particular message to start only when a person enters the target area. The company also offers a wireless content-management system which would achieve the same, but would be geared towards customers looking to place the speakers in less accessible places (or who intend to install multiple speakers). In this case, users would plug in their computer the wireless interface that comes with the bundle they would receive, they would drag-and-drop the desired files for the desired speakers, and then the content will play whenever someone enters the targeted area.
In addition to the Acouspade directional speaker, Ultrasonic is working on an futuristic a Syntact device, which creates a ‘force field’ of sound that musicians can touch and manipulate with their hands.
