Major investment news this morning for Estonian money-transfer service TransferWise announces that they’ve obtained $6 million (4,58 million euro) in funding in a round led by Paypal co-founder Peter Thiel’s Valar Ventures. According to information released by the company, their current plan is to dramatically expand their geographic footprint and to incorporate more currencies into their service. Countries which can expect to see the service in the near future include Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Africa, Russia, Ukraine, Israel, Turkey, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Latvia, and Lithuania (where they’ll be up against a similar service in TransferGo). According to the company, they already operate with 36 currencies and have processed approximately 148 million euro in transfers.
We’ve covered them several times in the past as they have really started to blow up. Back in January, they won at The Europas for “Best Middleweight Startup (Less than 3 years and/or less than 2 million euro in funding) and then they made headlines a few weeks ago when they announced that they were offering vouchers to support startups as they struggle with the cost of transferring money internationally. We’ve written it here before, but when I began writing for the blog in November 2012, it was fairly tricky to transfer money and not have a good portion eaten up by fees and commissions. We began using TransferWise to handle money transfers a few months ago and everything has run smoothly since.
