Foodpanda climbs the food-delivery app charts in Poland, Ukraine, and Russia. This story is maybe more global than regionally-focused, but there is certainly still a CEE connection. Foodpanda is a service which recently launched apps for Android and iOS. They’ve been a success globally, claiming more than 250,000 downloads, but they’ve also had an impact in the CEE region. In the food-delivery category, Foodpanda has managed to crack the top 2 in Poland and top 10 in both Russia and Ukraine. They only launched in late January, so this success has come entirely within the past 4 months. In addition to announcing their success in terms of downloads, Foodpanda says that they are consolidating the Russian Foodnation brand into Foodpanda.
Foodpanda is a service which allows users to order food from popular restaurants through their phone. They have websites for Hungary, Romania, Ukraine, Russia, and Poland from CEE at this point. Looking at the sites, it seems that availability varies based on the country you select. On the Polish and Hungarian sites, there are dozens of cities in which the service is available. In Russia, it seems that the service is only available in basically the largest 10 and you need to enter your address to learn about availability in Romania and Ukraine. Still, it’s a very young service, so we will likely see it soon spread to more areas. Having selected the item, a delivery person then brings it to your home or office.
Rocket Internet is the primary investor in Foodpanda. Although based in Germany, they have a number of international holdings in their portfolio and have a couple of other connections to the CEE region. In addition to the former Foodnation, they’ve invested in Russian online stores like Lamoda and Mebelrama and have offices in Warsaw and Moscow.
