Start Fellows has announced the list of 12 teams which will receive grants and participate in the organization’s events. The non-profit, which was established by billionaire Russian investor Yuri Milner and Vkontakte-founder Pavel Durov, will award $25,000 (19,200 euro) to each of the selected teams. The teams which were selected are:
Planner 5D – A service which allows users to create professional-quality floor plans online.
Surfingbird – started off as a Russian version of StumbleUpon, Surfingbird now helps find interesting content (images, video, stories) from around the web based upon topics you list (in English) and learns your preferences as you like or dislike an item. There are plenty similar services out there, but this service is more comparable to the news360 app and NextStories (which I recently wrote an extensive post on here).
you do is a service which allows users to farm out mini-tasks to other people. They can create a location-based task on the site and can find people to carry it out. Interestingly, Seedcamp invested in Milk.ly which was planning to do just that. Alas the company pivoted into something completely different since receiving investment in 2012.
Rosalind is described as a platform for learning bioinformatics through problem solving.
astro is a game which doubles as a social-network. Players earn points for going and meeting people. The game automatically alerts you to nearby interesting people, which encourages you to go and interact with them.
sputnik is a tour-company which offers visitors to take in the more unusual parts of St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Kiev, and has a touch of gidsy in its concept of using locals to explore less known areas.
takepin is a social-network where users fill out profiles for their friends. This allows people to find more reliable people for various services they may need.
Avatrip is a service which allows you to carry out various activities and go on trips remotely. You can control the camera from your location and enjoy places and activities you might otherwise miss out on.
LookInHotels bills itself as the first independent video catalog of hotels. It includes hotels from around the globe.
Dialoggy allows users to interact with a specific individual from a company’s customer service department. Customer-service representatives have profiles with pictures, which seems to be designed to create a more legitimate connection between a customer and the company in question.
We Heart Pics, the startup we wrote about recently, is a photography-based social-network, this service allows users to build a Facebook-style photographic timeline of themselves and also offers tips on items they may interested in photographing.
