Runa Capital-backed X-Cart launches X-Cart NEXT, its first cloud-based hosting platform. X-Cart already provides an e-commerce platform to thousands of businesses, but this is the first cloud-based service that they’ve offered. Perhaps most interesting here is that they’re releasing the source code for the service to certified developers, so that they can tailor the product to their needs. CEO Max Vydrin says that this move to release the source eliminates one of the biggest remaining issues businesses hold with e-commerce software, the lack of an ability to customize it to their needs. The company says that extensions or upgrades which the developers create will then be made available to the company’s partner community through its X-Cart NEXT Marketplace.
X-Cart was founded back in 2001 and has become a pretty well-established firm, listing more than 30,000 businesses in 110 countries as customers. Magento, now owned by Ebay, is one of its main competitors. In 2011, Russian venture fund Runa Capital acquired a minority stake in the company. Now, the company is transitioning to SaaS in its business model.
According to X-Cart, companies like PlusApple, MedShop, and RealSupplies already use the beta version of this new service. In total, the beta has been downloaded more than 40,000 times.
