For businesses and individuals alike, shipping packages can be a hassle. Smailex is a Russian startup which aims to simplify the shipping process by offering users the ability to easily compare American shipping services and see where companies attempt to add on unnecessary fees and charges. Using Smailex’s services, American customers will be able to compare rates for UPS, FedEx, and USPS and determine the best shipping option, which will enable them to better manage their personal or business finances.
I had the chance to speak with Oksana Loginova, the CMO of the startup, and she told me that, backed by $250,000 (184,000 euro) in angel investment funding, Smailex developed and launched an alpha version of their service in April 2012 and quickly attracted 1,000 users. Using feedback from this initial version of the product, the company just last month developed a beta and has now begun efforts to promote itself in the American market. Loginova told me that Smailex wishes to concentrate on the American market for now, but is exploring the possibility of developing a global presence once they have established themselves.
According to Loginova, there are at least 10 companies providing this type of service in the U.K., including Parcel2Go, they do not really have direct competitors in the United States. ShippingEasy is an Australian firm operating in the American market, but they are geared towards e-commerce, whereas Smailex hopes to focus more on individuals.
Previously Loginova took her previous startup App-Scale to Startup Sauna, but the project lost its lead developer and had to be closed.
