YouScan, an analytics service geared primarily towards Russian social-media sites (and those located in several other former Soviet states), has announced that it joined IT-cluster at Skolkovo, the Russian innovation center. This company was founded in 2009 and attempts to help clients (generally businesses), by providing information about the people who respond to their social-media accounts. The Ukranian founder Alexey Orap told me that this relationship was able to come to fruition because the Skolkovo supports his company’s work in analysis of big data and the development of Natural Language Processing (NLP).
This firm offers packages for various types of users, but the most expensive package (Agency) runs $14,990 (~11,600 euros) per year. The cheapest package is about $1,990 per year. Still, with a domestic clientele which includes Alfa-Bank, KupiVip, and Transaero and international brands such as Unilever, P&G, Bayer, and Nikon, it’s clear that there are some major brands out there who feel that the service is well worth the cost.
Recently we wrote about SocialBakers, which has made quite a name for itself as a global social-media analytics firm. In Poland we know Brand24, SentiOne, in Russia there is Wobot and there is a number of other players in this field.
YouScan service is more in the direction of BuddyMedia (sold to Salesforce for $800 million earlier this year) and focuses on former Soviet states. By maintaining a Russian-language site and focusing upon former Soviet states (for the moment), Mr. Orap believes that his site can gain an edge in this market.
Mr. Orap told me that, regarding seed-funding, they were partially self-funded through investment by the founders and partially received seed-money from The Open Fund (in addition to help with SaaS, advice regarding business strategy, and international contacts).
Social media monitoring remains a popular trend, however this may change as IBM has recently come out with the statement that the social media had a near zero impact on Black Friday sales.
