Exciting news for us here at GoalEurope as we have a great opportunity to post our first ever entry on Bosnia and Herzegovina. The lucky honor for this post goes to Startup Weekend Sarajevo, which was held this past weekend as a part of the popular, global “Startup Weekend” series. Organized primarily by Zsuzsanna Bayer and Selma Lomigora and counting USAID and the Bosnian employment-agency Posao.ba as the main partners, the event ran from November 16th through the 18th and had 80 participants in attendance.
The big winner at this event was certainly Printheos, a printing startup which describes itself as “an advanced specialised service for online business, designed for presses and print shops”. Unfortunately, the company’s site is under construction, so I don’t really have many details beyond that on this entry.
Gift of Blood walked away with the title for “Social Impact”. Based on this startup’s site, the team’s mission is to improve the blood-donation process by allowing donors to enter their email address into the site’s database and to receive a text or email when their blood is needed. Likewise, those in need are also able to take advantage by entering in their information and having an administrator at the local hospital take care of their need. Essentially, this startup wants to dramatically improve the donation process in Bosnia by ensuring that those in need will always have access to the blood which will save them.
Finally, the prize for “Best Pitch” goes to See & Do, which is a product seemingly dedicated to travelers (as the name of the company suggests). This startup aims to provide users with a mobile app capable of delivering information on nearby accomodations, sights, and events. I’m not sure as to how exactly the app functions (GPS, I’m guessing) and, at the moment, can’t really provide details beyond that.
As is often the case for this kind of event, the big winner (Printheos) walked away with a prize package that included a trip to Silicon Valley, office space, a couple of laptops, and online web-hosting support. The other two winners also received at least several months of web-hosting support and SEO-consulting services from seo.ba. All in all, this appears to have been a very successful event and I look forward to hopefully writing about this country again in the not-too-distant future.
