As anyone who has set foot in a college or high school classroom can tell you, taking notes is a critical aspect of your educational experience. During lectures, teachers and professors often use lecture time to explain and offer insight into assigned reading or to add material that the student won’t find in the textbook. Notatek, a Polish startup, aspires to be the go-to portal for Polish students to locate and share notes online.
The company’s site exists solely in Polish, so this company basically exclusively serves the Polish market, but as a database for notes, however, the site appears to fulfill its mission quite well. Users are able to search for notes by subject, lecturer, and university, and are able to submit questions if they need assistance from the public. For the most part, notes on the site are free. In some instances, however, notes must be purchased before they are able to be downloaded. In order to purchase the notes, the site states that users can buy credits (through SMS or wire transfer), by adding notes to the site’s database, or by answering questions that other users pose. In other words, users are encouraged to actively participate because doing so may enable them to purchase notes when needed for certain subjects.
What I particularly liked about the company’s site is the partner listings. Maintaining partnerships with local businesses allows partners to cross-promote their services, if you will. The companies that Notatek lists on their website are generally youth and career-oriented and maintaining relationships with them would seem like a good way to expand the business. Richard Lucas, a British entrepreneur, announced yesterday that he intends to invest Notatek, so it will be interesting to learn about the company’s future plans and direction (hat tip to MamStartup).
The service still misses a mobile version, and getting in touch with the founders is a bit of a challenge, but overall, the site seems to function very well as a study tool for Polish students.
