I am not a great believer in voice-based social networks, such as Ukrainian Hubbub.fm, perhaps because a computer is not a natural way to gather information through voice messages. At the same time, on the move, with a mobile phone the format might just work.
The Talkbits functionality includes “listen to the stream”, “send and exchange personal messages”, “initiate a group discussion” and “add messages to the stream”. Talkbits was founded by the former VP Marketing at SPB Software Olga Steidl (SPB has been acquired by Yandex last year).
So, what do I make of that, if anyone is interested to know? Dating – definitely. Listening to excited broadcasts from a local area, praising quality of bread rolls, or raving about a concert in the local bar might be a good way to learn about the local scene.
I do hope that the founders have thought about some form of moderation and screening of the messages, to avoid misuse such as spreading false gossips attached to a location (a school?) Facebook login should be a good filter for that.
Group discussion sounds a bit strange for starters, or I am too old to understand a need to communicate over the mobile when a group of people is in the same location: can this be, perhaps a game? But hey, any disruptive technology would make itself available, and the fans will find a way to use it. So before the most practical applications are found, I will leave aside questions about the business model.
