Infogr.am, Latvian interactive infographics service has just announced a release of its new version, and reported that 90,000 users create infographics using its web-based tool.

The new version allows users not only to add charts, photos and videos to the infographics, but also maps. This I think I will be using a lot, as presenting data on the map is probably the least automated element of data visualization.

The way Infogr.am works is simple. Choose a template from the library, change the title, add figures to the graph and upload the image or embed a video. To add a map, simply copy the country names and corresponding values (e.g. population, GDP or anything else) and the app will create a map within an infographics.

Once the infographics is created, it can be published and shared through regular social media channels: Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Pinterest. Users can also comment on the published infographics via Facebook comments, which are then posted on their Facebook wall. It can also be embedded into another website.

Inforgr.am is still in beta, and that explains why the website has some glitches. These range from error messages at the registration and email confirmation, to a black square instead of an image posted via Facebook comments on the Facebook wall.

The company has won Seedcamp (but later decided against moving to London), received funding from HackFwd and went through Startup Sauna accelerator. Founded by Uldis Leiterts and Raimonds Kaže, Infogr.am partnered with major European startup conferences: The Pirate Summit and the Pioneers Festival. Check out, for example, the infographics created for The Pirate Summit that takes place on the 10th and 11th of September 2012 in Cologne, Germany. So next week, from the main stage placed in the middle of artfully arranged rubbish at Odonien I will join George Lemnaru, the founder of eRepublik, and the Russian marketing communications consultant Daria Batukhtina to discuss our Eastern European startup ecosystem.
