Russian technology to name and shame bad parking jobs wins Gold at Cannes Lions

I just learned about Parking Douche from TheRunet, which first reported the news about it winning the Gold award in “mobile” nomination at Cannes Lions along with 10 other apps. Parking Douche is a mobile app for iOS and Android which serves to name and shame those drivers who park illegally or badly, commonly known as parking douchbags.

Granted, in Germany this will not fly, as people take pride in parking accurately. In England, in London at least it is all about money: miss a parking line by an inch, and you get a parking fine, or worse still, a wheel clamp.

But in Russia, where traffic police is too busy dealing with greater traffic offences or “monetizing the traffic”, the online publication The Village together with web portal Look at Me have taken the task of exposing parking offenders in their own hands.

The video above give a succinct description of what the app does, but briefly, anyone can take a photo of the incorrectly parked vehicle, upload it to the app which will then display the ads featuring the vehicle only to those who live in the neighborhood. One way a reader can get rid of the ad is by sharing it via social media. Now how viral is that?

Dealing with annoying drivers with help of internet has been done in the past (Douche Parking has been around since 2009 but twitted last in 2010, and then there is a Flickr channel called You Park Like an Asshole) but Parking Douche has certainly taken it to the whole new level.
