I’ve just learned that Estonian startup Zerply, a social network for freelancers and creative professionals, has raised $600,000 from Dave McClure and 500 Startups. Estonian Delfi Majandus broke the story.
LinkedIn does not do justice for freelancers, who switch from project to project more often than career folks switch jobs. Also Zerply allows creative types showcase their work. It aims to help freelancers build their reputation and get endorsements for specific skills. This in a way has been done by the contractor marketplaces such as Odesk and Elance, but quite often I come across the same people on both websites, who have portfolios and references all over the place. Zerply has a point and can help those freelancers have a single portfolio page.
Zerply connects various other accounts such as Tumblr, Vimeo, YouTube, Quora (LinkedIn is happy with Twitter and a blog at the moment), allows people follow one another, and have public conversations, in Twitter-style.
