In Ukraine we know incubator GrowthUp! By Denis Dovgopoliy and Nikolay Savin, and accelerator / seed investment fund Eastlabs, backed by East One. Both of them backed ActiveGift, which launches its gift selection service today.

The idea behind it should solve problem people have trying to select presents for one another. The way we solve it here in Germany is by asking directly: what would you like to get? And getting that very item. No surprises but also no disappointments. Boring, if you ask me.

I think the approach of ActiveGift is more interesting. To give a gift, one makes a list of gift ideas that the recipient might like. The recipient is then presented with the list, whilst the identity of the gift giver’s is kept secret. The recipient chooses most interesting gifts from the list, and the gift giver knows what to buy. Headache is over, off to the shop.

The website is in English, has a cool design. Max Krylov and Artem Sukhoroslov founded the company in April 2011.

There are other apps trying to solve gift giving challenge. For example, Wrapp solves the gift giving problem by allowing people to make financial contributions to the gift card via Facebook (the recipient will then use at the participating retailer’ store). Canadian Karma (smart phone app) allows giving specific gifts, but lets the recipient choose size, colour and shipping address. I suppose ActiveGift can integrate online retailers with its app and collect affiliate marketing fees.

Thanks!

I’d like to say that there are some cool, challenging and well-funded competitors of AG.
