When it comes to analyzing online competition, there are a few sites such as Compete.com that give a glimpse about competitor’s traffic, while Alexa provides some further stats.

Thanks to social media analytics companies such as SocialBakers that lift the veil off the useful competitors’ data. SocialBakers’ clients can analyze any Facebook fan page, identify key influencers, and track the content with the highest social media impact. The page monitoring service costs between $50 and $1000. In comparison , Radian6 (a division of Salesforce) offers competitive analysis feature for a plan starting at $4100 per month.

AllFacebookStats provides a similar service yet SocialBakers goes beyond Facebook. Recently the company started showing general stats for LinkedIn (still in Beta), Twitter and Google+. It appears that the recently raised $2 million funding from Earlybird Venture Capital will be spent on expanding product functionality.

SocialBakers is based in Prague, Czech Republic, and it is profitable from day one. Having started as a marketing agency, it originally created custom Facebook apps, built fan pages and helped increase fan engagement. It developed Facebook analytics software for in-house research but later offered it to its customers which now include Nike, Unilever, Samsung, Vodafone and Lufthansa. It has 57 000 fans on its Facebook page.

An early stage but interesting open source project SocialNumbers, created in late 2011, offers statistics about all Facebook fan pages in individual countries. It ranks them not only by size, but also by the quality of content. The end game of SocialNumbers is to help social media agencies demonstrate results of their work.

Currently it operates in France, Greece, Poland, Macedonia, Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzigovina. SocialNumbers has been created by the Croatian social media agency iStudio (which is also behind Mediatoolkit, reviewed yesterday).

Aside from competitive intelligence, SocialBakers allows analyze effectiveness of a brand’s own social media strategy. In this field the competition looks serious. On the enterprise end there are Buddy Media, Vitrue, Wildfire,  Context Optional, Meltwater Buzz, Shoutlet and NetVibes to mention but a few. Amongst more affordable tools there is ViralHeat. Latvian Campalyst (in beta) aims to measure conversion rate of fans to customers but this feature is not live yet.

Natasha, thanks a lot for the post and for mentioning us! Just wanted to let you know that the feature of measuring conversions from Facebook Pages and now Twitter is very much live! :) We work with quite a few marketers both in Eastern Europe and London / New York – and actually from our experience social media performs really well in terms of converting fans to customers – fans click more often, buy more often, and also spend more than customers from other sources (display, Facebook Ads, organic traffic). So it will be very interesting to see how marketers will take advantage of that in the coming year :)
