HackFwd website is rather geeky: visit it and see how well it communicates the techie motto “We invest in geeks”. But during this weekend’s Build 0.8 event in Berlin, (surprise surprise!) a three-girls team from MyGuidie won the startup competition. According to MyGuidie’s Ola Sitarska the website is not even that technically complex. MyGuidie is a B2C internet business, matching travelers with private tour guides, which is all about community building, marketing and PR.
Fresh from winning Startup Weekend Warsaw in May 2011, Sitarska and her colleagues Paulina Wardega and Kasia Mrozek have come up with a creative way to fund the business, by selling an iPad together with 1 per cent of the equity on Polish auction site for $7000 to get them through until now. With this budget MyGuidie launched a new version of the website, offered 30 experiences and attracted 5000 unique monthly visitors.
Should the team become another HackFwd Box, more money will be available on the standard HackFwd T&Cs: 25 per cent of the equity (plus 3 per cent to the mentors) in exchange for 91 000 to 191 000 Euros. To get there the team has to fulfill a standard set of requirements and pass Codility test.
Sitarska, who is 19, has created two internet businesses until now (an online fashion game and a Polish virtual Tamagochi game). She sold her stake in the latter to another co-founder who wanted to take business in a different direction. Having learned how to run a business using Internet as a main source of information, Sitarska now looks forward to join one of the Europe’s accelerators. The team will also be applying for January edition of Seedcamp.
To get to HackFwd, MyGuidie had to compete against a hundred of startups. Only ten were selected to pitch at the Build 0.8, amongst which three came outside of Germany. The winning team suffered a mild sleep deprivation (as per tweets), but has already recovered.
