Yesterday RBK Daily was the first to break the funding news from an open source web server developer Nginx, a Russian company. The founders raised $3 million from Runa Capital, Michael Dell‘s MSD Fund and German BV Capital.
Nginx software program is used by large scale, fast paced, content heavy web sites such as TechCrunch, Facebook, Groupon and WordPress.org. Nginx powers over 40 million websites. There are speculations that the investors bought 40 percent of the equity, considered low provided the growth opportunities for the technology which is the third most popular product on the market, with an 8% market share.
The company itself has been founded in summer 2011, but the software program existed since 2002. Igor Sysoev, the founder, developed it while working as a system administrator at Rambler.
Nginx management plans to use the money for a global expansion.
