Le Web, The Next Web… big technology events are attracting large numbers of startups and investors alike, publicizing new web technologies and inspiring entrepreneurs to pursue their ideas.
Investor Day CEE is a forum to discuss those ideas within the entrepreneurial community in Central and Eastern Europe. In 2010, according to Iryna Polishchuk, the conference coordinator, over 1,500 participants attended the Investor Day, watched the presentations of 150 start up companies, of which three were shortlisted.
The winner of the 2010 startup competition was Zingaya, an internet technology which allows users to directly place voice calls with companies by pressing a button on their websites. The Russian company is in competition with other click-to-call technology companies such as TringMe and Ribbit.
The second place went to ThickButtons, a self-funded startup from the Ukraine, which simplifies data entry on mobile phones by highlighting the next few letters that are likely to be used to create the word. The technology received excellent reviews from Fortune, Gizmodo, CNet, Wired and other renowned publications.
A Czech company, Lurista (now Guarenty Group, a landlord insurance company) took the third place in last year’s startup competition.
For the shortlisted startups, their participation in the event resulted in an increased visibility, driving press enquiries, investor interest and, ultimately, helping the businesses grow.
This year, on the 25th and 26th of October 2011, the new edition of the event will see the participation of Esther Dyson (chairman of EDVenture Holdings, investor into many Russian startups and cosmonaut-in-training), Loïc Le Meur (founder of LeWeb), Elena Masolova (founder of the Russian online coupon business Darberry, sold to Groupon in 2010), Andrej Nabergoj (until recently CEO of Outfit7, the maker of Talking Tom), Andrei Romanenko (president of QIWI, the Russian instant payment system) and many others.
The working languages of the conference are English and Russian, translation to English is provided. To register or participate in the ID CEE startup competition, visit the Investor Day CEE website.
